Ernst Haeckel coined the term “ecology,” was a contemporary and early supporter of Charles Darwin, and created extraordinarily detailed illustrations of medusae and other marine life. A professor at Jena University, he also founded and funded the Phyletic Museum. Yet Haeckel’s legacy is complex: his writings on race contributed to ideas later appropriated by Nazi ideology. We will visit his former home in Jena, where his study (Arbeitszimmer) has been preserved much as he left it, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life and work of this influential—and controversial—scientist.
