Description

This workshop is a joint event of the Frugal Photonics for Global Health Lecture (Abbe School of Photonics) and BOOST Innovation Sprint 2026. Please only register if you're part of the Innovation Sprint. The number of participants is limited to 20.

Turn your ideas into tangible physical products—fast. This hands-on Lasercutting for Prototyping workshop is tailored specifically to help the attendees bringing product concepts from ideas into the real world.

Learn how to quickly move from low-fidelity cardboard mockups to precise, professional prototypes using vector graphics software and laser cutters. Whether you need a functional enclosure, a branded display piece, or a physical proof-of-concept for your pitch, this session gives you the tools to iterate rapidly.

What you’ll learn:

    • Basics of Lasers: What a laser is and how lasers are employed in prototyping and manufacturing.

    • Vector Graphics Software: How to design cutting and engraving patterns using open-source software (FreeCAD/Inkscape) that can be processed by a laser cutter.

    • 2D to 3D Assembly: Design structural parts, snap-fit enclosures, and packaging using simple 2D vector files (SVG/DXF).

    • Rapid Physical Iteration: Master quick test cuts and kerf adjustments to go from idea to finished prototype in minutes.

    • Material & Cost Selection: Match materials (wood, acrylic, cardstock) to your product budget and aesthetic goals.
